Thanks to the Motability Scheme, adaptations are available in order to make your driving experience as comfortable as possible. This means adapting a standard production car to better suit your needs as a driver, or a passenger. According to the Motability Scheme around 40,000 people have had adaptations fitted to their vehicle in order to make driving or travelling in a car more comfortable for them, and you could be next.
Typically, Motability vehicle adaptations fall into three different categories. These include driving adaptations, stowage adaptations, and access adaptations.
Driving adaptations
This form of adaptation is designed to help make your driving experience easier - including perhaps enabling someone to drive where they may not otherwise be able to. Driving adaptations include assistance with things like speed control, steering and signalling, from simple attachments to full control replacements.
Stowage adaptations
Stowage adaptations are designed to help you store your scooter or wheelchair through easy-to-use stowage systems. These can include things like boot hoists or rooftop stowage units, which take the weight of your wheelchair or scooter in order to help get the item safely and securely into your vehicle. Take a look at this Motability video on stowage adaptations for more information.
Access adaptations
If you have accessibility issues when it comes to your vehicle then a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle is not your only option. There is a range of access-related adaptations that can be installed on a standard car in order to make it easier for people to get in and out. These include swivel seats, electric person hoists or transfer plates. See this vehicle access information video from Motability for more details.
During the process of choosing a car Lochside Garages can advise you on which adaptations may help to make your life easier. It’s important to consider that not all adaptations are suitable for all models of car, so it might be a good idea to have a chat with one of our Motability experts and let them help you work out which combination of model and adaptations best works for you.
